Top New York Republicans are out to shoot down a first-of-its-kind measure now making its way through the state Senate that would place a new tax on ammunition.

The measure, introduced late last month by a pair of Democrats, would place a tax of up to a nickel on each round of ammunition measuring .22 caliber or less. Revenue from the bill would fund gun violence research being conducted through the state Department of Health and the State University of New York...

Many veterans halls, like the American Legion, were forced to close or cut back services during the pandemic. U.S. Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-NY) has introduced legislation that would help them get back on their feet.

The bill would set up a $25 million grant program. Veterans services organizations, like the VFW, could apply for up to $50,000 to keep their halls open and continue providing critical services.

Andrew Garbarino (R-Bayport) said the legislation, called the VSO Support Act of 2022, would establish a $25 million grant program to help the organizations "keep their doors open, similar to what was done for small businesses during the pandemic."
