Garbarino, Clarke, Cassidy, Rosen, Introduce Bipartisan, Bicameral Resolution to Designate June as National Cybersecurity Education Month

June 7, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Andrew R. Garbarino (R-NY-02), Raking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security's Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection, and Innovation Subcommittee introduced a Resolution to Designate June as National Cybersecurity Education Month. The resolution also aims to educate Americans on the essential role of cybersecurity education and to support federal, state, and local efforts. Rep. Garbarino was joined by Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (D-NY-09) in the House, and by Senators Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) and Jacky Rosen (D-NV) in the Senate.

“In today's hyper-connected world, cybersecurity is national security,” said Rep. Garbarino. “As our foreign adversaries grow increasingly sophisticated, it is more important than ever that we fill the cybersecurity talent pipeline to ensure that we can meet rising cyber threats and better protect our future. That starts with education and awareness which is why I am proud join Senators Cassidy and Rosen and Congresswoman Clarke in introducing this bipartisan, bicameral Resolution to designate June as National Cybersecurity Education Month and to promote the essential need to improve cybersecurity literacy among K-12 students.”

"As Chair of the Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection, & Innovation Subcommittee, I have long pursued the solutions necessary towards protecting American interests and the American people in cyberspaces in the face of hostile powers bolstering their own cyber capabilities. While technological advances are significant in our efforts, they remain only half the equation. If we do not take the steps to provide our population with the cyber literacy necessary to detect and overcome these virtual threats, a daunting vulnerability will persist through our defenses,” said Rep. Clarke. “When it comes to cybersecurity, knowledge equates to safety and security. Through National Cybersecurity Education Month, we will further our federal commitment towards educating the American people on the best practices to protect their personal information online from any threat that may arise long into the future.”

“Cyberattacks affect all aspects of life and demonstrate the need for stronger protections,” said Dr. Cassidy. “We need a national focus to prioritize cybersecurity education and enhance prevention efforts.”

“As the first former computer programmer elected to the United States Senate, I’m honored to recognize June as National Cybersecurity Education Month to highlight the efforts to increase cybersecurity literacy among K-12 students," said Senator Rosen. "As cyber threats have been on the rise, I have prioritized legislation to protect our students and teachers from cyber threats and equip them with the skills to be ready for the next generation of cyber jobs. Strengthening and diversifying the cybersecurity workforce is key to improving our national security.”

This bipartisan bicameral Resolution is endorsed by Microsoft, SAP America, Inc., and  CYBER.ORG.

“Microsoft supports the bipartisan, bicameral Congressional resolution designating June as National Cybersecurity Education Month. We look forward to working with Congress to develop solutions to address our nation's critical need for an expanded cybersecurity workforce. Thanks to Congressman Garbarino, Congresswoman Clarke, Senator Cassidy, and Senator Rosen for their leadership,” said Fred Humphries, Corporate Vice President of U.S. Government Affairs, Microsoft.

“SAP is proud to collaborate with US school systems to expand cybersecurity education opportunities to K-12 students and educators. We need to invest in K-12 education and introduce students to the knowledge, skills and capabilities around cybersecurity if we want to have a long-term disciplined approach to closing the cybersecurity workforce gap. We believe designating June 2022 as National Cybersecurity Education Month is a necessary step in strengthening America’s 21st century cybersecurity workforce, and we welcome the introduction of this resolution, said Anjelica Dortch, SAP Senior Director of U.S. Government Affairs.

“This National Cybersecurity Education Month, we hope to bring greater urgency to preparing future generations for cybersecurity careers,” said Kevin Nolten, Vice President of the Cyber Innovation Center. “It has never been more important to provide our nation’s educators with the tools to teach K-12 in their classrooms. This new national platform helps us convene key stakeholders across industry, government, and education to take up the mantle on cybersecurity education and help solve the workforce shortage.”
