Garbarino Announces $360 Million For New York to Help Families with Home Energy Costs

October 25, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Andrew R. Garbarino (R-NY-02) announced that New York State was awarded $360,015,351 in funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Administered through the Administration for Children and Families’ Office of Community Services at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this funding will help individuals and families with low incomes pay their home heating costs this winter, and with cooling bills in the summer. LIHEAP can also be used to weatherize homes to make them more energy efficient, and during disasters and extreme weather to mitigate energy emergencies.

"As heightened energy costs make it more difficult for Long Island families to afford to heat their homes this winter, these LIHEAP funds will provide critical home energy cost relief,” said Rep. Garbarino. "I am pleased to announce this award that will ensure even more families can benefit from this essential program."

This funding release includes funds appropriated by Congress from the Continuing Appropriations Act, 2024, as well as $100 million appropriated for FY 2024 from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). In total, New York was awarded $353,678,934 from regular LIHEAP block grant funding and $6,336,417 in funding appropriated for FY2024 from IIJA.

Individuals interested in applying for LIHEAP can visit energyhelp.us or call the National Energy Assistance Referral (NEAR) hotline toll-free at: 1-866-674-6327.
