Garbarino Helps Veteran Widow Wipe False Debt Clean

A constituent contacted my office for assistance with an issue involving the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS). Her late husband, a combat veteran who served our nation for over 20 years, had allegedly been overpaid during his service. After his passing, she was told she would need to repay tens of thousands of dollars—a debt she couldn’t afford. While she sought clarification about the supposed overpayment, additional penalties were added, further increasing the debt. I intervened, demanding an explanation for how this debt was determined. The debt was then found to be erroneous, fully forgiven, and she received a complete refund of the funds she had already paid.
