WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Andrew R. Garbarino (R-NY-02), Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee's Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection, recently introduced a House Resolution to recognize October as National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. The President of the United States and Congress have declared October to be Cybersecurity Awareness Month every year since 2004, encouraging and supporting individuals to protect themselves online as cyber threats become more complex. Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-CA-14), Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Committee's Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection, joined Rep. Garbarino as co-lead of the Resolution while Representatives Laural Lee (R-FL-15), Troy Carter (D-LA-02), Mike Lawler (R-NY-17), Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX-17), Carlos Gimenez (R-FL-26), Rob Menendez (D-NJ-08), Morgan Luttrell (R-TX-08), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE-At Large), Anthony D’Esposito (R-NY-04) and Mike Ezell (R-MS-04) joined as original cosponsors.
"Cyberattacks impact entities large and small, from critical infrastructure and major corporations to school districts and small businesses,” said Chairman Garbarino. "Being aware of the threat is the first step to mitigating cyber risk and ensuring government, organizations, as well as individuals and families, are able to protect themselves from malign cyber actors. My committee is committed to safeguarding Americans from cyber crime and is working diligently to increase cyber literacy and bolster our cyber workforce."
"I'm glad to co-lead an effort to recommit our support for October being National Cybersecurity Awareness Month with the Chairman of our cyber subcommittee as we continue promoting cyber resiliency in our businesses, homes, government, and military,” said Ranking Member Swalwell. "From protecting personal information against foreign adversaries to securing our critical infrastructure, cybersecurity is a critical function of our homeland security."
"We appreciate Rep. Garbarino’s support of Cybersecurity Awareness Month and his recognition of how important security education and awareness is in enabling Americans to protect themselves online. Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a vital initiative and this resolution underscores our nation's commitment to the safety and security of our digital infrastructure and citizens," said Lisa Plaggemier, Executive Director of the National Cybersecurity Alliance.
